Office add-in missing? Re-enable it
When the Content Central buttons vanish from Word, Excel, or Outlook: where Office hides a disabled add-in, the two dialogs that bring 'Content Central Office Integration' back, and the registry value behind a stubborn case.
At the end of this guide the Content Central buttons are back in your Office application — because you know the two places Office parks a disabled add-in, and the order to check them in.
The add-in's name, exactly as Office lists it: Content Central Office Integration. It runs in Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio, and Project — and Office itself sometimes switches it off, typically after a crash or a slow startup that Office blamed on whatever add-ins were loading.
Check the two hiding places, in order
Both live in the same dialog — in the affected application, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
1. Disabled Items — where Office puts add-ins it turned off after a problem:
At the bottom, set the Manage: drop-down to Disabled Items and click Go.
If Content Central Office Integration is listed, select it, click Enable, close the dialogs, and restart the application.
2. COM Add-ins — where an add-in can be present but unticked:
Set Manage: to COM Add-ins and click Go.
Tick Content Central Office Integration and click OK. If Office reports it can't load it, note the exact message — that's what support needs.
What you should see: after restarting the application, the Content Central controls are back on the ribbon.
Each Office application disables add-ins independently — the buttons vanishing from Outlook says nothing about Word. Repeat in whichever applications are affected.
The stubborn case: the registry value
When re-ticking the add-in doesn't survive a restart, the load setting itself is stuck. The add-in registers per application under (64-bit Office):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\<Application>\Addins\Koi<Application>2010AddIn— for example ...\Office\Word\Addins\KoiWord2010AddIn, KoiExcel2010AddIn, KoiOutlook2010AddIn. (Visio's sits under SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Visio\Addins\.) The LoadBehavior value should be 3 (load at startup); Office writes 2 or 0 there when it gives up on an add-in. Setting it back to 3 — with the application closed, and administrator rights, since these are machine-wide keys — restores loading. This is IT-team territory; users should stop at the dialogs above.
If it keeps happening — or was never there
- Office re-disabling the add-in after every crash points at the crash, not the add-in setting — capture when it happens and what was open, and bring that to support.
- If the add-in isn't in either list, it isn't installed on this machine: Set up the Office add-in covers installing the right version (64-bit or 32-bit — matching your Office, not your Windows) from your server's Downloads page.
Success check: restart the Office application twice. The buttons present both times means the fix stuck; present-then-gone means the registry case above.
